Artist Statement     leithdp@sbcglobal.net

I work with previously embroidered linens, maintaining a consciousness between the old and the new. I add new embroidery to the old embroidery to create a contrast between the thoughts and time of the originator and my concept.

For "Dirty Laundry", the original consciousness of the linens spoke to me about formality and wealth. It spoke not only of financial wealth, but wealth of many friends and family, wealth in traditions, wealth in memories, wealth in having enough to eat, wealth in having a nice home, wealth in feeling safe.

I embroidered on these previously embroidered linen dinner napkins some realities of life; some reasons why these "wealths" are not felt by all, some reasons why 1 out of 100 people may end up in our prison system.

While in prison the dining experience is a contrast to how these original linens were used. The tin plates are used on the inside, the linens are used on the outside.
