Elise Cheval as Namaka in her mini opera "Voice for Mother Earth" at Green Citizen in San Rafael debuts on Saturday, October 11, 2014
Recycle Artist Elise Cheval moves to the stage!
Less than 1 week after Green Citizen, an environmentally and socially conscious business collecting e-waste for free opened their 19th center in the Bay area, Elise Cheval was contacted through her web site and asked to show her art and stage a grassroots performance in San Rafael. With big dreams to reach people about the impact of plastics on the marine environment and human health, Elise puts her money where her mouth is and makes her costumes out of recycled materials. For her mini opera, "Voice for Mother Earth", she knitted and crocheted recycled audiocassette tapes to depict the endangered sea dragons, creatures she saw for the first time at the Monterey Bay Aquarium in 2009. For the performance at Green Citizen, Elise created a music concrete, using sound effects of whales, shorebirds, and African animals, which have a "conversation" with concert pianist Jeffrey Paul and Native American percussionist QiQe White Elk. During the performance, models wore the project GREEN runway collection including a dress made out of recycled plastic Target bags. Elise's recycled art is currently on display through November 22 at Green Citizen, 777 Grand Avenue and 2nd Street, San Rafael. The performance was videotaped by professional videographer Evan Harrar and will be shown on You Tube.

Quotation Marks Show a HIT at the Mill Valley Library
Marla's piece honoring Abraham Lincoln's words was beautifully hung by Juline and Julie. Diana brought 9 people to the show, who are writers and poets. We look forward to growing our Quotation Marks show and sharing our work with the public.
We had an opportunity to have a picture of the whole gang showing their artwork. Unfortunately, Roz had left, but she sold her piece, showing in the photo below, with the proud owner!
We're excited now! In October The Mill Valley Library will host the newest PLEXUS show featuring works inspired by quotations which have intrigued each of our artist members on personal levels. Plan to meet the artists and enjoy refreshments -- attend the opening reception October 1, from 6 - 8 pm .What quotes from a book or author jump to your mind? What lines in a poem do you remember?
The 14 members of Plexus Art Group make art that sheds light on social and political issues, such as the importance of literacy. For this exhibition, each artist has selected a different quote and by using a variety of materials including thread, fabric, paper, wire, metal, etc., and has created a unique piece inspired by it.
We hope that viewers of our art will be inspired to use quotes as a starting point for a discussion.
This show will next be traveling to the Roseville, CA Library in May 2014.

Plexus Art Group is saddened at the death on July 3rd of one of our founding members, Roni Peskin Mentzer. Not only was Roni a very fine fiber artist, she was a huge inspiration to us, her artist friends. She encouraged us to join her in using the power of art to fight cancer. As a group, we made eye-catching hats to cover balding heads, which were auctioned off to support Zero Breast Cancer, an organization she helped found. The hats traveled around the country engaging a larger community of fighters and were even incorporated into a film, “Mondays at Racine,” which was nominated in 2012 for an Oscar in the short documentary category.
We were blessed to have Roni as part of our group. She taught us about courage and living fully each day with grace and humor. While she is gone, her creativity and spirit will live on her art and our hearts.
Summertime...and there are places to go and things to do (which is why this post is a little delayed). But getting back to places to go. I've had the opportunity to do a bit of travel this summer, and what a treat I discovered when I was in the United terminal 3 at SFO! They mount some pretty amazing shows, and this one blew me away. The exhibit is "The Art of Recology: The Artist in Residence Program 1990-2013" and runs through October 2013. The exhibit is so diverse and extensive, I nearly missed my plane!! The views and philosophies expressed resonated for me personally, and I think it would be safe to say, for our PLEXUS GROUP, as well. To quote Artist/Activist Jo Hanson,(1918-2007) who was the 'pioneer' of this program, "All of my work takes shape with love and care and takes issue with waste and disregard. I feel the work as a metaphor for transformation and transcendence. It insists that we change our ways and our thinking and become guardians of the resources of the earth which supports our life and is more fragile and endangered than we used to believe possible"
So run, don't walk to see this beautifully displayed show....and maybe even catch a plane while you're there! ENJOY!

I highly recommend seeing the show which closes on June 9th. www.accigallery.com
