More than 1 out of every 100 people in the United States is behind bars. Our country has the highest known rate of incarceration in the world. California’s rate of violent crime is 11% higher than any other state. “1 in 100: America Behind Bars,” was created to encourage people to stop and think about why this is, how it impacts families of prisoners and the community at large, and what we can do about it.
